Each year, I like to choose and share a "Word of the Year" (WOTY). This word acts as my guide, inspiring me throughout the next 12 months. It’s a practice that has kept me grounded since 2016. This year, I’m focusing on simplicity. My word for 2025 is BE.
Why BE? Because sometimes we make life more complicated than it needs to be. This year, I want to focus on presence—on being rather than doing. I want to BE present in each moment. I want to BE kind, grateful, and calm. BE curious. BE patient. I don’t want to rush through life, but instead, live it with intention and openness.
I often hear the phrase "Be YOU," and wonder just what it means. I know I’m not alone in this: it’s a question I’ve heard from clients who are unsure of how to be themselves because they don’t know or are still figuring out who they are.
And I get it ...
At one point in my journey, I struggled with the same question. That’s when my coach asked me, "What life do you choose?"
It was the question that started me down the path to coaching, yet at the time I didn’t know how to answer, because I was still learning who I was and what I wanted.
I’ve come a long way since then, and I continue to do the work.
Today, I understand that "being me" is about living intentionally, and making decisions that are in alignment with my values. I can’t control other peoples’ actions or decisions, and I don’t try to push my values onto others. Instead, I offer them freely, and let them shape how I show up in the world. I choose to be grounded and mindful about how I live my life, and hope others do the same, in their own way.
Can you relate?
For some of you, BE may resonate with you. You may even choose it as your Word of the Year! And if it doesn’t, that’s okay. The beauty of this tradition is that you get to choose a word that speaks to you, that motivates you, and guides you.
What will your word be for 2025? I can’t wait to hear what inspires you as we head into the new year!
